Empowered and Intentional Leadership in 3 Steps!

I have been working canine behavior my entire adult life. I have a unique perspective and careered experience EMPOWERING people to stand up straight and behave in a manner that will influence their dog to behave.

Most of the families I have worked who are struggling with undesired behaviors are not being the best dog leaders they can be. This hurdle to success is usually due to past experience, personal fears and uncertainty. For decades, We have known the benefits of intentional dog leadership/parenting and it works!

The style of influence am referring to is “Adaptive Leadership” . Using this proven approach significantly reduces negative effects that past experiences, personal fears and uncertainty will have any learning process.

Here are the 3 steps to Adaptive Leadership:

1. Observation: Pay attention to your dog's behavior and identify recurring patterns that you want to address. For example, if your dog constantly jumps on visitors, observe when and why this behavior occurs.

2. Interpretation: Understand the underlying motivations behind your dog's behavior. Consider what needs or desires your dog is trying to fulfill. This could include seeking attention, food, or a sense of security. For example, your dog may be jumping on guest in an attempt to socialize and an opportunity to have a fun mini party : )

3. Commitment to Intervention: Once you've observed and interpreted your dog's behavior, commit to implementing proactive and practical methods to address it. This might involve training exercises, setting boundaries, or providing alternative outlets for your dog's needs. For example, you can create proactive control by putting a drag leash on your dog prior to guest arriving. Step on the leash to prevent the jumping; praise and reward or not jumping.

Benefits of this Approach:

- Effective Communication: By being intentional and observant, you can better understand your dog's needs and communicate your expectations clearly.

- Building Trust: Consistently addressing your dog's behaviors with understanding and positive reinforcement builds trust and strengthens your bond.

- Creating a Positive Environment: Proactively addressing behavior issues creates a more harmonious and enjoyable living environment for both you and your dog.

- Long-Term Success: This approach, although not always linear, leads to gradual but sustainable improvements in your dog's behavior over time.

Remember, being a deliberate leader to your dog involves ongoing commitment and patience, but the rewards of a well-behaved and happy canine companion are well worth it.
