Introducing Your "Covid Puppy" to the Real World

Introducing and socializing a new puppy, including a "COVID puppy," into public spaces is an important part of their development.

Socialization helps puppies become well-adjusted, confident, and friendly adult dogs. Here are some general steps to introduce and socialize your puppy in back into public places or for the very 1st time:

  1. Start at Home w Positive Rienforcement: It will help to avoid getting to wild with your expectations. Begin by introducing your puppy to various experiences and objects in a controlled environment, such as your home and yard.

This helps them build confidence and adapt to new sights, sounds, and smells.

Use positive reinforcement techniques like treats, praise, and toys to reward your puppy for good behavior and when they encounter new things without fear.

  2. Basic Training: Teach your puppy basic obedience commands such as "sit," "stay," and "come." These commands will help you maintain control and a more approachable demeanor in public spaces and keep your puppy safe.

  3. Gradual Exposure: Once your puppy is comfortable at home, gradually expose them to different environments. Start with quieter, less crowded places like a friend's backyard or a quiet park.

  4. Leash Training: Get your puppy used to wearing a collar and leash. This is easliy done by putting the puppy’s collar and leash on during meal time until they are not bothered by it. Begin leash training at home and then take short walks in your own neighborhood.

  5. Public Spaces: As your puppy becomes more comfortable with the leash, start visiting more public places like local parks, pet-friendly stores, and outdoor cafes.

Choose locations where you can maintain physical distancing and predictable distractions. Don’t get wild and walk into a parade, crowded brewery or otherwise high distracting and unpredictable experiences.

  6. Socialization: It's important to introduce your puppy to various people, other dogs (if possible), and different situations.

Having concerns about how to start introducing your puppy to other dogs and people?? Feel free to send me an email with your questions - - k9visionbuffalo@gmail.com or you can schedule lessons with your local friendly dog trainer : )

  7. Positive Experiences: Make these outings as positive as possible. Use treats and praise to reward your puppy for good behavior. If your puppy shows signs of anxiety or fear, take a step back and make the environment less challenging, then gradually work your way up.

  8. Day School and Puppy Classes: Consider enrolling your puppy in Doggie Day School or a puppy socialization class. Many classes are held in outdoor spaces with safety measures in place.

Remember that socialization should be a positive and gradual process, and it's crucial to prioritize your puppy's wellbeing and safety. Reach out and connect with me or local behaviorist for more specific guidance based on your puppy's individual needs.

Cheers,
